Assalamualaikum w.b.t, hai guys today i would like to continue my blog with my view about the impacts of wedding culture diversity in Malaysia. First of all i would like to revealed the meaning of diversity itself. According to Dictionary. com, cultural diversification is the cultural variety and cultural differences that exist in the world, a society or an institution. It is means the other norm or the way of life that have been enter to the existing culture.  In wedding culture scope, the impacts of diversification is, the next generation not be able to well recognize the actual norm, custom of their own races. For example, in Malay races, the cultures have been mix with Chinese and Indian culture when there are life together in Malaysia. For instance, Indian nowadays wearing a baju kurung that actually represents the Malay's identity. After that, the next generation will confuse with the culture that need them to follow thus, it can lead to culture confusion. The identified of the situation is people will exposed to other culture, norm and custom that can easily influence the way of life of Malaysian people. It is means, people will not show the true identity of Malaysian peole that have lot of  culture uniqueness in wedding ceremony.

Hai guys, after sharing about the culture shock, today i would like to share about wedding culture that have in malay. Do you know that nowadays, not all people follow the rules and ritual that always been practices by our ancestor. This is shows about the differences of acceptable regarding the wedding cultures in Malaysia for then and now.
This is some example of several wedding culture that have in Malaysia for Malay

Related source:

  • Merisik ( Visit and observe)
  • Meminang ( Propose)
  • Bertunang ( Engagement)
  • Adat Berinai (Wearing Henna )
  • Khatam al AL-QURAN
  • Wedding ceremony
For the first wedding culture is Merisik ( visit and observe ). This custom begin with adat merisik as the mening to ensure that the girl is still single without any relationship with others. This steps is really important whereas as a muslim, it will become forbidden to propose other's fiancee. After that, during this session the family can learn more about the future wife through informal inquiries. It is usually is done by relatives such as mother, father and uncle.

Then, it is continued in another day which is meminang that in intention to set the day and date for men's family to send the propose delegation officially. By doing this step it is means the girl is available and agree with the propose.
After that, the custom continue with engagement ceremony. During that day, the men's family will give the "barang hantaran" or it is like present such as 'tepak sirih', sirih junjung' a ring and some additional stuff to the future wife and the girls also reply with 'barang hantaran' without ring.

Afterward, malay wedding culture involve with adat berinai (wearing henna). The ritual is to celebrate and shows the bride with a beautiful and uniqueness from others
adat berinai
After adat berinai have been done a day before the wedding day, khatam al-Quran will be done at night after nikah or early in the morning before bersanding.
khatam al-quran
khatam al Quran will be done to show the grateful when become someone's wife.
Then, at last the wedding ceremony or bersanding

bersanding (now)

before

As for all the custom that have in Malaysia such as Malays wedding culture it is shows the uniqueness  and beautiful of Malaysia that have lots of culture. It is shows the differences with people nowadays that only do a nikah and bersanding ceremony without do the others. For example, wedding nowadays are more popular than before in terms of foods, baverages, decoration and many more including the bridal dress that differ from before that only wearing a songket. All of this really demand for high cost and it can make the differences between poor people and rich people. It is means, poor people can not afford to have a special and grand wedding ceremony. So as a Malaysian, we need to preserve and sustain our culture from fade and dull to make our country is more special without any differences of standard of living.

The next post will discuss more about the effects of cultural diversification in malaysia.

This is the video of wedding martial art. This ritual always been practiced in previously and nowadays there are not always been practiced again. there are some factors about the fading the culture in Malaysia. One of that is culture shock. The term Culture Shock was first mentioned in literature by Kalvero Oberg in 1960 and In his article Oberg defined Culture Shock as " precipitated by the anxiety that results from losing all our familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse". Culture shock is refer to the feelings of distress and unease when being exposed to a foreign culture. When this thing happen, people or individual will feels isolated and misses the familiar symbols, attitudes and habits of the culture origin. For example, Malaysia is a country that have huge foreigners such as from Indonesia, Myanmar and many more. Not only from foreigners, Malaysia also influence by the printed and electronic media that exposed about western culture and Malaysia citizen tent to follow the culture that the foreigners brings in. Below is shows about the wedding culture that influence with western culture according to the dress code.

wedding trend follow the western culture

western culture
now bridal follow western culture

From this picture there are not showing any of traditional and malay culture in the wedding ceremony. They are follow the western culture. Another reason of this problem happen is because of the culture that Malaysian citizen bring in the outer culture into Malaysia country when they are come from abroad such as exchange students sojourners, expatriates, migrants and refugees. This is because due to increasing international competition, worldwide marketing activities, new market access opportunities and a fast growing number of international mergers and acquisitions, managers and employees are necessarily confronted with international projects and assignments, or becoming an expatriate working and living abroad. Malaysian students constitute one of the fastest growing international student groups in U.S.colleges and universities in the last 2 decades. Between 1986 to 1990 academic year, there were approximately 49,000 Malaysian students studying abroad, of whom 7,500 were in the United States. There were approximately 20,000 government-sponsored and private-sponsored Malaysian student enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities (Malaysia, 1991). From Joumal Pendidikan Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Jilid 6. Oktober 2000. hot. 77-93. From this situation, it is obvious that the severance of Culture Shock varies significantly among these groups and it can be conclude that the diversification that happened in Malaysia is come from the number of people that ever live in western or other country and try to make a culture change towards origin country including wedding culture.

Hello everybody, today i would like to share with the readers  some of differences culture that practices of Malaysian citizen formally and now.
back then

now(buffet serving)

wedding cake

pulut kuning
From the picture above, it shows that tradition that always been practices is becoming fade and people tent to follow the modern and western culture. For example, back then the citizen will do a "rewang" in order to help the process of wedding ceremony but now people love to only do a catering to prepare the dishes. By this situation, it is actually affect the cooperation and relationship among citizen. By during "rewang" people can have a good interaction and relationship each other when all of them help each other to celebrate the bridal but when do a catering the situation will not same and the citizen will not gather to do a preparation. Automatically, the tight relationship will not built up among them.
After that, the food that served towards guest nowadays also not really same as what people served back then. For example, nowadays the ritual of cutting the wedding cake is using the baked cake and it is differnt with the formally ritual in which the bridal will use the pulut kuning. This is because people back then believes the pulut kuning shows the respective towards the bridal as a " Raja Sehari" and without the pulut kuning, the ceremony will not glorious. Another thing is the wedding door gift for back then is different with nowaday. For instance previously people will gift the guest the door gift such as a "berkat" and " Telur Pindang" but nowadays, the door gift is candies and other thing such as cup cakes and candle. It is actually more towards the western culture. Nowadays telur pindang is quite hard to find in wedding ceremony because the process to make it is quite complicated. This is the picture of Telur Pindang.

Hai guys, morning. For today i would like to start my blog with the wedding culture that has in Malaysia. As we know wedding is the ceremony in which two people are united in marriage or similar institution and for the culture is refers to the way of life, the shared of knowledge, custom, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings and other means that possessions acquired by a group of people in the course of generations through individual and group. So, for wedding culture it is means the experience or custom that have been practices for a long time ago until know. Malaysia is country that have a multicultural such as Malays, Chinese, Indian and for Sabah and Sarawak, there have a lot of indigenous ethnic group with their own culture and heritage. Then, it same goes to the wedding culture that there have been practices.
In my view, wedding culture for know and then in Malaysia is become quite different in term of the dress code, the custom and the ceremony. This is because, Malaysia having process of other culture penetration that influence Malaysia citizen basic etiquette,  or formal custom. Malaysian society is remarkable due to the openness to diversity. The blunder of an outsider are tolerated, charming dividend of Malaysia's cosmopolitan .From this situation, it is actually contribute to culture challenges whereas how all the Malaysian citizen to sustain the existing culture although having a huge process of culture shock and the situation actually contribute to the changes of culture in Malaysia including wedding culture.OK, lets we share more about the differences of wedding culture in Malaysia for then and now on my next post.
